Profile: Ramsay Cairns is delighted to welcome Dr Siva Bala as Consultant Psychiatrist.Dr Bala completed the undergraduate degree in Medicine at the University of Western Australia and postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, receiving fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) in 2007. He has a certificate of advanced training in Adult Psychiatry and is a member of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry of the RANZCP. Dr Bala has worked extensively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and is currently chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee of the RANZCP. He has published book chapters and articles in peer reviewed journals on Indigenous mental health, intellectual disability and suicide. He has been an advisor to State and Federal Governments and mental health commissions in Indigenous mental health policy and was an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Western Australia. He continues to lecture, present at conferences and publish academic papers in the area of Indigenous psychiatry.Dr Bala welcomes referrals for independent medical examinations in civil and forensic matters. He is a board certified Independent Medical Examiner with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. He is an approved medical specialist for Workcover Western Australia and a Permanent Impairment Assessor for Worksafe Queensland, providing fitness to work and permanent impairment assessments. He is highly experienced in nervous shock and criminal injuries compensation assessments. He undertakes presentence risk assessments, parole assessments and fitness to plead assessments for Magistrates, District and Supreme Court in Western Australia and Queensland, and assesses both plaintiffs and defendents. He has conducted over 1,000 forensic assessments by videolink with expertise in assessing Indigenous Australians and sex offenders. He regularly appears in court to provide expert testimony.Although Dr Bala is able to accept instructions for medicolegal cases, he is not able to undertake treatment currently, and he does not accept referrals for family court assessments.Dr Bala supports adult inpatients at The Cairns Clinic.
