About Dr Shanta Velaiutham
Profile: Dr. Shanta Velaiutham is a consultant general surgeon with special interest in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast cancer surgery. She has over 10 years of surgical experience working in Malaysia, Australia and Scotland.In 2008, she moved to Newcastle and has been working in the Hunter region since then. She obtained the Fellowship in General Surgery, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is also a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. She undertook a clinical breast fellowship at the Edinburgh Breast Unit, Scotland. This unit is the largest single integrated breast unit in the United Kingdom treating over 20000 women yearly and managing about 840 breast cancer cases a year.She has also completed the Level 1 and Level 2 Breast Reconstruction Course at the Royal College of Surgeons England, The Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Live Surgery course at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan and the Oncoplastic Reconstructive Course in Nottingham.Since returning to Australia, in collaboration with two other breast surgeons and a plastic surgeon, she has established a new unit, the Integrated Breast Reconstructive Surgical team (IBReST). They will work in unison to provide comprehensive care for women with breast cancer, providing the options of oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery, if suitable.
