Profile: Dr Michael Thomas is a respected fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon experienced in general orthopaedic and trauma surgery, including joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. He has special expertise in complex hand and upper limb trauma and elective surgical management, including rheumatological conditions. Dr Thomas is competent in microsurgical repairs and all aspects of upper limb arthroplasty, for both trauma and degenerative joint disease.Dr Thomas currently serves as Senior Staff Specialist and Deputy Director of the Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital where he has had the opportunity to provide a first class upper limb as well as a general Orthopaedic trauma service for the Gold Coast, since 2007. He is also a Visiting Medical Officer at Gold Coast Private and John Flynn Private Hospitals.Previously, Dr Thomas trained and worked in the UK with several renowned British Orthopaedic and Upper Limb Surgeons at leading public and private hospitals. He also undertook a Hand/ Upper Limb Fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, in 2005. Additionally, from 2012-14, Dr Thomas sat on the Independent Medical Examinations panel for WorkCover Qld.Dr Thomas has also consistently been involved in both undergraduate and junior doctor education, teaching and lecturing registrars in both the UK and Australia. He has been a faculty member at national and regional training courses, and is a current member of the Training in Professional Skills faculty for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 2019 he will be the invited local guest speaker for the Queensland Hand Surgery Society’s annual scientific meeting.Further, Dr Thomas maintains Continuing Professional Development and regularly attends educational meetings at home and abroad, including courses, conferences and cadaveric surgical workshops. His work has been published in peer reviewed journals, and his Upper Limb research has been regularly presented and quoted at national and international meetings.
