About Dr Fred Chen

Dr Fred Chen is an eye surgeon with over 10 years of experience specialising in diseases of the retina.
He studied medicine in Perth at the University of Western Australia and completed 4 years eye specialist training at Royal Perth Hospital. He devoted an additional 5 years in advanced training in complex retinal surgery and retinal transplantation at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. In 2010, he successfully completed a PhD in stem cell therapy for retinal diseases at the University College of London. He returned to Perth in 2011 as a clinical-academic with a special interest in genetic retinal diseases. In his clinic, he treats cataract, macular degeneration and retinal emergencies.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Chen conducts clinical trials in macular degeneration, retinal imaging and ocular toxicity. He leads a team of researchers investigating stem cell and new drug therapy for inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and given 30 invited talks nationally and internationally in retinal disease and treatment.
Outside of his professional life, Fred enjoys playing music with his 3 children.
