Professor Alvin Ing is a Professor, Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MQ Health), Macquarie University. He is also the Sub-Dean (Research), at the Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School, University of Sydney. He has been involved in Interventional Pulmonology since 1993, when he helped establish endobronchial laser resection and stent deployment at Concord Hospital. He was instrumental in forming one of the first and largest patient databases in this area, and is one of the few physicians in NSW specialising in and accredited in these techniques._x000D_ More recently he has help established endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) at the SAN, Concord Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital, and has pioneered the use of endobronchial valves in patients with COPD and emphysema (Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction – ELVR). Professor Ing also performed the first bronchial thermoplasty procedure in NSW, treating patients with refractory asthma. He is performing ongoing research into ELVR and Bronchial Thermoplasty, actively supervising PhD and MD students in these areas. He also utilises the new technique of cryobiopsy in the diagnosis and management of intersitial lung disease, proximal endobronchial tumours and peripheral lung nodules. Professor Ing has published his Interventional Pulmonology work in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised seven PhD students. He also has continuing research interests in chronic cough, pulmonary complications of gastro-oesophageal reflux and laryngeal sensitivity in pulmonary disorders.
