Profile: Mr Benjamin Keong is a consultant upper gastrointestinal, bariatric andgeneral surgeon.He graduated with an MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 2003.He completed his residency and general surgical training at the AustinHospital, Heidelberg.Ben completed his surgical training and was admitted as a Fellow ofthe Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2012. He thenundertook 4 years of post-fellowship training at Box Hill Hospital andSt George Hospital, Sydney. For two of those years he was selectedas a trainee on the highly competitive post-fellowship national UpperGI training program run by the Australia and New Zealand Gastric andOesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA).During his training he gained experience in management of benignand malignant gastric, oesophageal and pancreatic conditions. Hisyear of fellowship at St George Hospital, which performs the highestvolumeof bariatric procedures in Australia and is the only accreditedBariatric Centre of Excellence in the country, gave him invaluableexperience in all aspects of bariatric surgery, including management ofits potentially-serious complications. He is experienced in elective andemergency general surgery, and is GESA-accredited for endoscopy.Ben has a keen interest in junior medical staff teaching and hasbeen involved with medical student and registrar teaching at EasternHealth. He is a faculty member of the ASSET course for the Collegeof Surgeons. He has presented research on topics including commonbile duct stone management, and manometry in post-bariatricpatients.Ben holds a strong belief in collaborating with patients to allowthem to make the best decision for themselves. He also believesthat involving the patient’s GP as a core part of the team will help toachieve the best possible long-term outcomes for patients, and ishappy to be contacted at any time for advice.
