About Dr Yishay Orr

Dr Orr completed her undergraduate medical degree at the University of NSW graduating in February 1999. Dr Orr then progressed through intern and residency years and commenced working in cardiothoracic surgery in 2001 at Liverpool Hospital and then Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2002. During 2003-5 Dr Orr completed her research PhD investigating neutrophils and the systemic inflammatory response to cardiopulmonary bypass through the School of Medical Sciences at the University of NSW (Supervisor Prof Len Kritharides). Dr Orr then completed one year of general surgical experience (including 6 month vascular surgery) as part of her Advanced surgical training. Following this Dr Orr commenced her Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgery training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, working for 2 years at Royal Perth Hospital with a strong focus on Heart & Lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. This was followed by 2 years at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. After obtaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in January 2011 Dr Orr embarked on 3 years of paediatric cardiac surgery training with 2 years at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead followed by a year long Fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital during 2013. Dr Orr is currently working as a Visiting Medical Officer at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Westmead Hospital, The Sydney Adventist Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital. Dr Orr's main clinical focus is the surgical treatment of adult and paediatric congenital heart disease. She is also very actively involved in the surgical treatment of acquired adult cardiac and thoracic disease. Other current clinical interests include implantation of cardiac rhythm devices, management of paediatric mechanical circulatory support and planning for the establishment of a paediatric heart and lung transplant and mechanical circulatory assist program in the Sydney Children's Hospital Network. Dr Orr is also very actively involved in Open Heart International as a paediatric cardiac surgeon contributing to 3-5 trips a year within which they teach and empower local surgeons to perform paediatric cardiac surgery in often remote and under-resourced countries. Dr Orr is actively involved in academic work at the Heart Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead researching clinical outcomes following paediatric cardiac surgery both locally and nationally.
