Steve grew up in Newcastle, NSW. He had a cancer operation in his 14th year that set him on the road to his medical career, the road less travelled. He did an electrical apprenticeship in an underground coal mine. He was awarded Class 1 Honours for his work on kangaroo reproductive physiology after studying biology. A year as a Ph D candidate investigating vaccines for use in Cystic Fibrosis led to the realisation that clinical medicine was where he belonged. His kangaroo work led him to obstetrics and gynaecology. Despite his love of O&G he eventually chose rural General Practice because it was a better match for his other passion, his family.
