He also worked at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire and Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.“Working closely with neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, maxillofacial surgeons and other ENT surgeons provided me with broad exposure to a wide variety of pathology,” Shane said.“The fellowship year also gave me the opportunity to present a number of talks at the European Rhinology Society scientific meeting, discussing experiences in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in elderly populations and outcomes of endoscopic optic nerve decompression.”With sinusitis a common problem, Shane sees a role for ESS in patients who are struggling with medical management alone.“JHC has all the latest equipment, allowing for complex sinus surgical cases to be conducted safely and effectively here,” he said.Shane highlights the expanding role of ESS in addressing problems beyond sinusitis and nasal polyps to be able to resect benign and certain malignant tumours via this approach; providing the patient with less morbidity compared to open approaches, shorter recovery, all without compromising oncological principles.With snoring and sleep disordered breathing common in children, Shane considers that in most instances, adenotonsillectomy continues to be a good operation for dealing with this problem. Despite the risks of surgery remaining low they still pose a concern for families, something Shane is well aware of when counselling patients and their families.Recently, Shane was appointed as a WA Board Member for the Earbus Foundation.“As part of my role, I travel regularly to remote and regional areas of WA; fully supporting the Earbus mission to reduce the incidence of middle ear disease in Indigenous and at-risk children in WA to below the World Health Organization benchmark of 4%,” Shane said.
