Profile: Waverley Private Hospital would like to introduce Dr Ryan De Freitas. Ryan is an ENT Surgeon with fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgery. Ryan was raised in Hobart, completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with honours at theUniversity of Tasmania in 2002.After internship he ventured to Belfast, Northern Ireland, completing basic surgical training and gaining Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He returned to Melbourne in 2009 to undertake ENT Registrar training which included six months at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He gained Fellowship to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2013. He then travelled overseas for 2 separate fellowships. His first as the ENT Head and Neck Fellow at Beaumont Hospital Dublin, a large teaching hospital and the National Centre for Cochlear Implantation in Ireland. This fellowship included the role of Clinical Lecturer in ENT at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. Ryan was privileged to teach the ENT curriculum to medical students and trainee GPs.Ryan completed a second fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery at St George’s University Hospital London. This fellowship included a high volume of benign and malignant thyroid tumours, and minimal access thyroidectomy. After his fellowships, Ryan spent a year on the Gold Coast where he managed the full spectrum of Adult and Paediatric ENT conditions, including many cases of surfer’s ears in the local population.Ryan has an ongoing commitment to best patient care, education and research. He has lectured widely and published numerous scientific papers in the field of ENT and has a passion for the training and mentoring of junior doctors. In addition to his expertise in Head, Neck and Thyroid Surgery, Ryan has an interest in minimally invasive nose and sinus surgery and he welcomes GP referrals for the management of all general adult and paediatric ENT conditions.
