About Dr Peter M R Stewart

Dr Peter Stewart is a Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon. He is a GESA accredited endoscopist in Upper Endoscopy and Colonoscopy, and a Supervisor of Endoscopy for Surgical Trainees in the Hunter/Central Coast Surgical Training Network. Dr Stewart provides specialist surgical care for all colorectal conditions including advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, endoscopy, and abdominal general surgery such as gallbladder surgery and laparoscopic hernia surgery. After graduating from Sydney University in 2006, Dr Stewart underwent two years as a medical officer on the Central Coast before commencing specialty surgical training in NSW. In 2013 he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, before undergoing a further two years of subspecialty training in Colorectal Surgery at Gosford Hospital and John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle NSW. In early 2016 Dr Stewart furthered his skills in the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Florida Colorectal Unit, where he gained valuable experience in the latest treatments for benign and malignant colorectal conditions. Thereafter he was appointed as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrooke’s) Cambridge, England in 2016-17. Dr Stewart is extensively involved in teaching at undergraduate level, as well as supervising and training of surgical registrars. He is an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for Surgical Training selection as well as Examiner for the Surgical Clinical Examinations, Part I for surgical trainees. He is an Instructor for ASSET surgical skills course for surgical registrars. Dr Stewart has presented and published at national and international level on various aspects of Colorectal & General Surgery, and is a Member of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). In 2016 he was awarded Master of Surgery in Colorectal Surgery from Sydney University for research related to the use of aspirin in colorectal polyp and cancer prevention.
