Dr Illes graduated in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1980, and trained in internal medicine at the University of Capetown from 1990 to 1993. He then undertook training in Cardiology at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne as the Senior Registrar to Professor RWFC Campbell, the president of the British Heart Foundation.
