He graduated from University of Melbourne Medical School in 1976. From 1979 to 1984 he trained in Ophthalmology at Brighton Eye Hospital England , then Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital Melbourne. He then spent a fellowship year at Flinders Medical Centre in the areas of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Medical Retina .

From 1985 to mid 1987 he was seconded to Universiti Sains Malaysia , and founded their Ophthalmology department including training of a number of Malaysian Ophthalmologists. He worked then as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Childrens Hospital from 1987 to 1992.
He has worked in Geelong since 1989.

For more than 25 years he has worked on Overseas Eye programs in the South Pacific, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Cambodia and he currently volunteers as Deputy Chairman of Karingal St Laurence, a large disability service based in Geelong.
