Profile: Dr Mark Cross is a Psychiatrist specialising in general adult psychiatrywith a special interest in sexuality and identity issues, youth mentalhealth, complex trauma, PTSD, bipolar, as well as mental health in theworkplace. Dr Cross has a background of medical training in SouthAfrica and Specialist Training and consultant work in England and inAustralia, specialising in adult general psychiatry. He has worked inPsychiatry for 25 years is a Senior Lecturer at UNSW as well as actingconjoint lecturer at UWS.Dr Cross has been involved in HIV work since medical school in SouthAfrica, before starting his psychiatry training in 1992 and continuingwith work in HIV psychiatry thereafter. He was a board member of anHIV charity in South Africa and he trained for a year in London in HIVpsychiatry when specialising as a psychiatrist.He has been a member and supporter of the AGLP group (AmericanGay and Lesbian Psychiatrists) as well as a member of “Pink Shrinks”a gay and lesbian psychiatrist group whilst working in London. Heserved as a board member of BGF in Sydney, HIV charity, from2011-2016.He joined the board of SANE Australia in 2016, part of the charity’smission is to improve the mental health of those living with complexmental health issues as well as reducing stigma, and this includes theLGBTI community.Dr Cross treats people from the LGBTI community with acute mentalhealth symptoms and those looking at for a non-judgemental approachto therapy as well as those with identity & sexuality concerns, sexualtrauma and depression.He is passionate about equality, human rights, ethics in psychiatry,reducing stigma and improving the care and quality of life of peoplewith lived experience of mental illness.
