• in 2015 prof Austin was awarded the Marce Society Jon Rampono Marce medal for her achievements in perinatal mental health research and service delivery.
• Professor Austin and her team have developed a mental health screening tool for women, known as the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire (ANRQ). This tool is now recommended for use in routine psychosocial assessment as per the National Guidelines launched last month (October 2017). In addition through her leadership of the national action plan and subsequent Perinatal Depression Initiative, Prof Austin has been instrumental in the creation of new (November 2017) Medicare items requiring all obstetricians and GPs caring for perinatal women in the private sector (a third of all pregnancies), to also undertake psychosocial assessment. This now means that all Australian women, whether they give birth in the public or private sector, will have their emotional wellbeing assessed, and be offered support as needed.
