Profile: Dr Lydia Mowlem graduated from the University of Auckland in 2000, receiving the award for the most Distinguished Medical Graduate of the Year. Lydia commenced training as a General Physician at Middlemore Hospital, one of the largest tertiary hospitals in New Zealand. Lydia additionally spent several years working in the area of Acute Medicine, caring for sick medical patients presenting to Emergency departments.Lydia then undertook Respiratory training at Auckland City Hospital, managing diverse conditions including lung cancer, tuberculosis, respiratory infections, respiratory failure and airways disease. Lydia developed proficiency in bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial biopsy, pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound.Lydia travelled to Australia to undertake a Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2013. During this fellowship, Lydia learnt about the interpretation of polysomnography (sleep studies), the management of sleep disorders and non-invasive ventilation.
