Dr Dayan graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1984 before moving to NSW in 1986. She first started seeing HIV clients in 1989 and completed her Masters of Medicine in Sexual Health at the University of Sydney. During this time she worked at Kirketon Road Centre, and provided surgical terminations of pregnancy and Family Planning advice and care. In 1992 she moved to New Zealand and worked as the main doctor in the Wellington Sexual Health Centre until 1995, when she moved to a busy hospital in the city of London during the peak of the HIV epidemic. She then went on to become a Fellow of the College of Sexual Health Physicians and returned to Sydney to take up a position as Head of the Sexual Health / HIV Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, and the Northern Area Health Service in 1996.
