Profile: A/Prof Kevin Alford obtained his MB BS (Hons) from the University of New South Wales in 1970.After Professorial resident and registrar posts at The Prince of Wales/Prince Henry Hospitals he obtained his Specialist qualifications (RACP) in 1974.Further Cardiology advanced training was undertaken in South Africa with Prof. John Barlow at Johannesburg General Hospital and Prof Leo Schamroth at Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto, and then in the United Kingdom at The Hammersmith Hospital and New Charing Cross Hospital.He returned to Australia in 1977 to commence practice in Port Macquarie as the first full time Physician/Cardiologist, and was appointed to the Hastings District Hospital. He has been instrumental in the formation of the Coronary and Intensive Care Units at the Hastings District Hospital and then the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.A/Prof Alford introduced all forms of non invasive cardiology to this practice, including cardiac stress testing, ambulatory Holtor monitoring, ambulatory BP monitoring, transthoracic and transoesophogeal Cardiac Imaging services and obtained a Diploma of Diagnostic (Cardiac) Ultrasound in 1982. He was the inaugural Director of Cardiology at PMBH and is currently the Senior Cardiologist/Physician in this region. He has published in journals, including Heart & Lung, Medical Journal of Australia and Clinical Ultrasound.He has actively helped with the expansion of medical services in the area and was involved in the institution of both Junior and Senior Medical Officers as well as Registrar and Advanced Trainee rotations to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.He has a keen interest in teaching and played an integral part in the establishment of the Rural Medical School of UNSW in Port Macquarie, with appointment as Senior Lecturer in Medicine at UNSW. He was the inaugural Director of Basic Physician Training and current Director of Advanced Physician Training for the Royal Australian College of Physicians in this region. He has lectured extensively in undergraduate and post graduate forums, including State and National meetings for the College of Physicians and Cardiac Society of Australia & NZ.
