About Dr Karl Baumgart
B.Sc(Med), MBBS, PhD, FRACP, FRCPA
After graduating from Sydney University, Dr Baumgart trained in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He undertook research into the immunology of infectious diseases and obtained his PhD from Sydney University in 1996. Dr Baumgart supervised Immunopathology and related areas of testing in private pathology practice for four years before joining Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology in 1997. He divides his time between the laboratory, where he holds the positions of Director of Immunology and Director of Molecular Biology, and his clinical practice as a Consultant Physician in Clinical Immunology and Allergy. Dr Baumgart’s practice is based at the North Shore Medical Centre along with rooms at the Wahroonga Specialist Centre, and he has clinical appointments at Sydney Adventist Hospital, Manly Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and the Mater Hospital. Dr Baumgart is active in the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (see www.allergy.org.au), and served as its President in 2005-06. Dr Baumgart's current research interests include Laboratory tools for the diagnosis of allergic and immune disease, periodic fever syndromes and "neoallergens".
