Associate Professor Dimitri Yellachich graduated from medical school at UWA in 1997 with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists’ Gold Medal. He pursued his keen interest in ophthalmology by training in Perth before going to the USA and the UK for sub-specialty training in vitreoretinal surgical and medical conditions.

A/Prof Yellachich has a long standing interest in biomedical technology dating back to 1993, when he received first prize at the Young Scientist Symposium held by the Australian Society for Medical Research, for work in designing an excimer laser surgical scanning device. His interest in biotechnology continued during his time at Stanford University, USA, under Professor Mark Blumenkranz. During this time he was involved in the development of the PASCAL retinal photocoagulator, which has become the new standard for laser treatment in diabetic retinopathy. His interest in biotechnology is ongoing, with his continual involvement in the development of new medical devices.

A/Prof Yellachich’s very strong interest in imaging complements his daily care of patients with macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, diabetic retinopathy and various other retinal conditions. He has been performing small gauge vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachments and other retinal pathologies since its introduction. In addition to vitreoretinal surgery, A/Prof Yellachich also performs cataract surgery.

A/Prof Yellachich has also been involved in charitable work for numerous years, and has played a key role in setting up a local vitreoretinal fellowship with the Myanmar Eye Care Program.
